Welcome Message from the
IHPBA 2010 Congress Chairman

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is a great honor and pleasure to invite you to the 9th World Congress of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association that will be held on April 18-22, 2010, at the Hilton Buenos Aires hotel in Argentina. The Congress will be organized by the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association – IHPBA, the American Hepato-Pancreato Biliary Association – AHPBA and the Argentine Chapter of the International Hepato-Pancreato Biliary Association – CAIHPBA.

The International Scientific Committee is planning a very comprehensive scientific program that will cover keynote lectures, update lectures, video symposia, panel discussions, interactive discussions and most importantly, free paper presentations. We are allocating a significant amount of time to free papers, video and poster presentations to provide enough exposure to researchers.

The Organizing Committee has chosen the Hilton Buenos Aires hotel as the venue for the upcoming congress, as it is considered to be a top location for such a high-profile Meeting.

The Industry is also committed in their support of our meeting that will host a large exhibit area and many attractive opportunities to share their products and knowledge with the audience.

Buenos Aires, one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America, is a dynamic and radiant city that features stunning architecture and a vibrant cultural life. You will have plenty of touring and shopping opportunities to take advantage of in the city. Take time to wander through the Buenos Aires’ many historical landmarks, enjoy the grace of Tango and experience the passion of soccer. From Buenos Aires, you may travel and enjoy the rest of Argentina, which beholds extraordinarily beautiful nature not found in many, if any, other places in the world.

A full social program that includes an Opening Ceremony and Reception, a Tango Evening and a Gala Dinner will make your evenings unforgettable.

We invite you to visit the website regularly for the latest updates and news about the organization of the Congress.

See you in Buenos Aires in 2010!

Eduardo de Santibañes, MD
IHPBA 2010 Congress Chairman

Welcome Message from the
IHPBA President

It is a great pleasure for me to invite you to the 9th World Congress of IHPBA which will be held in a beautiful city, Buenos Aires, Argentina from April 18 to 22, 2010. The venue for our meeting will be the Hilton Buenos Aires which is located in the newly developed site of the city. You will find beautiful houses and restaurants full of international atmosphere along the safer river side road around the Hilton Hotel.

According to the leadership of Professor Eduardo de Santibañes, the IHPBA 2010 Congress Chairman, the 9th World Congress is co-organized by the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association – IHPBA, the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association – AHPBA and the Argentine Chapter of IHPBA, and the International Scientific Committee (Chairman – Prof. van Gulik) has been planning a comprehensive scientific program which has been devised in close collaboration with the local organizing committee of the meeting. The scientific program is also supported by excellent international faculty, all of whom are famous and well known not only in clinical HPB medicine and/or surgery but also in HPB research.

I believe that we will offer you a highly scientific congress, fruitful discussions with authorities from all over the world.

We encourage you to submit your scientific works to the Congress and participate in the exciting meeting together with your co-workers. I am confident that all participants will surely enjoy the beauty of Buenos Aires and look forward to meeting you and your family there in April, 2010.

Welcome Message from the
AHPBA President

The 2010 AHPBA annual meeting will be held in conjunction with the IHPBA World Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina in April 2010—the first time in the history of our society that it is held outside the United States! As AHPBA President, I am honored and excited to preside over this particular meeting because of my fondness and deep appreciation for Latin and South American cultures and the many friends and colleagues that I have befriended throughout the region as an academic HPB surgeon. It is with great pleasure and fanfare that I invite all members of AHPBA, along with their families and friends, to participate in this historic assembly.

During the past year, the AHPBA has taken important steps to become a more globally inclusive organization. We have worked particularly hard to expand our contacts throughout the Americas and to strengthen and broaden our membership from HPB surgeons residing in our Southern Continent. This year, we created a combined AHPBA/IHPBA membership with the hope of enlisting many more South and Central American IHPBA surgeons to join our ranks and to make attendance at the IHPBA more affordable for all AHPBA members. The AHPBA will solicit corporate-sponsored scholarships to support the travel of 50 young HPB surgeons to attend the meeting.

Yet no outreach effort across the Americas by the AHPBA will be as important as the commitment by the AHPBA membership to participate in and attend the Argentinean-hosted IHPBA/AHPBA meeting in April of 2010. I therefore strongly encourage everyone to make travel arrangements now so that you can attend what will be a festive and exciting meeting in one of our hemisphere’s loveliest cities. Our association’s future success as a more globally integrated society with Northern, Southern, and Central American representation depends upon your attendance and participation. Although integrated with the IHPBA meeting, the AHPBA will have as many oral presentations, posters, DVDs, and symposia as are included in our typical annual meeting.

For those who have never attended an international surgical meeting, the 2010 Buenos Aires AHPBA meeting will open your eyes to advances in care from around the world not yet seen in practice in North America. For those who have never ventured to South America, attending the 2010 conference affords you a chance to experience one of the most exciting and beautiful countries in the world and to treat your family to a wonderful holiday. As one who has participated in numerous South American Surgical Congresses and having enjoyed the hospitality of Eduardo de Santibañes on many occasions, I promise you that you will have one of the most enjoyable times of your life. So come with me and taste the exhilarating pleasures that “The Paris of South America” has to offer you.
